Welcome to Bellum Punicum. This is a game set in the ancient Roman Republic, ca. 270 BC. You play as one of Rome's leading citizens during a turbulent time in which the Republic found itself facing the great power of the western Mediterranean at the time. Upon the start of our game Rome and Carthage still have an alliance in place that restricts Rome's influence to the mainland of Italia.
The Republic securely controls the peninsula, and Her leaders ache under the yoke of Carthaginian dominance. This is not the Age of Kings, when Etruscan nobles dominated the government, and the bold Romans believe that the gods encourage Her expansion. Your character is a member of one of Rome's leading families. You will influence diplomacy, war, and domestic policy as you rise through the ranks of Roman magistry. Glory will bring you into the Senate, and give you the influence to vote for laws (leges), form coalitions, and hopefully rise to the highest ranks of Rome's executive offices, the Consul.
The Empire is a long way off, and players will not benefit from autocratic aspirations. Rome is decidedly in favor of Republican government, and the Senate is at the height of its power and prestige, though the mobs have already unified behind their various factions. As a noble of Rome you will command your own faction, and when you vote your followers will mostly follow suit. This is an era dedicated to the glory of the state over the individual, citizen-funded public works, and ultimately the point at which Rome decides whether She will slowly head towards autocratic dominance or toward democratic hegemony.
This is where you decide.
